Music on the Lawn with Hungrytown — Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

We will hold this concert indoors if the weather is inclement.

After more than a decade of world-wide touring and three album releases, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson–otherwise known as the folk duo Hungrytown–have earned a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting: “It’s great to hear an act eschew sentimentality in favor of honesty and to prove that you don’t have to go raiding the memory of others to find the stuff that really good songs are made of,” writes Jedd Beaudoin of Popmatters.

Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (Northern Sky, UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (No Depression) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (Folk and Roots, UK).

Hungrytown’s introduction to folk music came when a close friend–who died young due to a tragic misdiagnosis–entrusted to them her collection of 1960s folk albums and her guitar (which has since been featured on all of their albums). Soon afterwards, Hall released two solo albums, Sings! (1999) and Sunday Afternoon (2002), both produced by Anderson. In the winter of 2003, the duo quit their boring desk jobs, moved to the green hills of Vermont, and decided to pursue a full-time career as touring musicians.

They released their first CD, Hungrytown, in 2008; Any Forgotten Thing in 2011; and Further West in 2015. Hungrytown’s music has received extensive radio airplay worldwide and has appeared on several television shows, including Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, IFC’s Portlandia and Netflix’s Lady Dynamite.

As part of this concert we will be partnering with Hungrytown on the “Let’s Feed This Hungry Town” initiative to supply non-perishable foods to the Haddam Food Bank. Please bring non-perishable food with you to the concert. The food bank is especially in need of tuna, peanut butter, pasta, tomato sauce, and beans.

River Views: An Appreciation of  Our State’s Namesake Waterway

Clean-up at Haddam Meadows

Saturday, September 29, 2018  9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

In our series of lectures on the appreciation of the Connecticut River we have learned about the history, geology, edible plants, and the predatory birds of the river. Now that we have a better understanding of the river, help us as we step outside of Brainerd Memorial Library to clean a section of Connecticut River. Brainerd Memorial Library and Adopt A Park Volunteers will be working together at Haddam Meadows to clean up trash and invasive plants. This event will be held in conjunction with the Connecticut River Conservancy’s Source to Sea annual cleanup. Please meet in the open area to the left of the boat launch.

Adults and youths are encouraged to participate. Youths will need to be accompanied by an adult. Please dress appropriately for the weather, bring garden loppers or a saw, water and gloves. Volunteers with Haddam Transfer stickers are needed to help transport items to the station.

You may sign up either at www.brainerdlibrary.org, call the Library at 860-345-2204 or look for our team on the Connecticut River Conservancy website at www.ctriver.org under the Get Involved tab.

All participants of the clean up will need to sign in and complete a waiver form before starting to clean up.
